New 5-year study reveals low rates of total knee replacement and reduced utilization of healthcare services in patients treated with Apos®

A new study published in The Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Treatment, showed the long-term effect of Apos® reduced total knee replacement (TKR) incidence and healthcare resource utilization over five years.1

The study followed older adults with chronic knee pain who were treated with Apos®. A survey that was done after 5 years found that 18.4% of 414 respondents required TKR surgery, which is significantly lower than the expected rate for this population. Other studies that followed people who received standard, conservative care to treat their knee pain showed that, over time, 34% to 50% of the patients progressed to having TKR.2,3

Another key finding of the study was the effect of Apos® on the patients’ use of other healthcare services. Most participants reported using other health services to manage their knee pain before the intervention. Among those who had been receiving specific treatments before using Apos® , 64% of them stopped receiving injections to the knee, 44% stopped taking pain medication, and 46% did not continue receiving physical therapy. The changes in healthcare utilization indicate that patients were able to manage their condition well with Apos® over a long period of time.

The implications of these results for healthcare systems and payors are substantial. Harry Leider, MD, MBA, AposHealth®’s Chief Medical Officer commented: “With increasing prevalence of knee osteoarthritis, and the associated costs exceeding $80 billion in direct medical costs annually, this important study establishes Apos® as a compelling core component of a care management program for musculoskeletal disease.”
